About the Show

When The Lion King arrives in Houston from July 10 through August 12, audiences won’t just hear the beloved songs from the animated film, but additional music written for the stage show. In this video, director Julie Taymor and producer Thomas Schumacher explain how the themes and elements of the movie contributed to the music of the Broadway hit. Musical supervisor Clement Ishmael describes how various musical styles were used to set the tone for different characters, such as the threatening hyenas being accompanied by a rock underscore and “aggressive, choral African music” playing while the lionesses are hunting. Watch the video to learn more about Elton John and Tim Rice’s award-winning score, then get your tickets to see The Lion King!
