'It’s 'Les Miz!' It’s one of the best shows ever written!'

Although Fantine’s storyline in the classic musical Les Miserables is filled with heartbreak and tragedy, Betsy Morgan, who plays the part in the national tour, is filled with joy over the role.

“Fantine is one of the most beautifully written characters in musical theater,” Morgan said about what it’s like to sing her character’s iconic solo, “I Dreamed A Dream.” Fantine is the poor, single mother of Cosette and is part of some of the show’s most emotional moments. “I feel completely fulfilled with both her story and her music. And I get that fulfillment in less than an hour!”

Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells the story of ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine's young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever. This newly imagined production comes to Sarofim Hall at the Hobby Center from November 6 through November 11.

“It’s Les Miz! It’s one of the best shows ever written!” Morgan said, noting the show’s extreme popularity, 27 years after its debut. “Shows that withstand the test of time are a total wonder to me. I feel so lucky to be a part of this one.”

The sweeping Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil score includes the beloved numbers “I Dreamed a Dream” and “On My Own.” In addition to Morgan, the show stars Peter Lockyer as Valjean and Andrew Varela as Javert.
