In addition to featuring a beloved score and sympathetic hero, epic musical Les Misérables features one of the greatest villains of all time: Inspector Javert. Andrew Varela, who plays the complicated antagonist on the show's national tour (playing Houston's Sarofim Hall at the Hobby Center from November 6 through November 11), talked to Broadway.com about giving depth to his bad guy status, belting “Stars” and his “exotic” facial hair.

Varela loves embodying the inspector obsessed with hunting down hero Jean Valjean, but his favorite aspect of the role is singing "Stars." "It’s the first time I’m alone on stage, and Javert is examining his motivation,” Varela said. “It’s a dream moment for any actor, and it’s a damn fine song.”

Besides being one of the greatest songs to belt for an actor, “Stars” also gives Varela a chance to flesh out his character. “It’s about making Javert a human being and reaching beyond the simplicities of playing the bad guy,” Varela said. In the challenge of making Javert more relatable, Varela has found some traits he shares with him: “I’m not a very good swimmer, and I love exotic facial hair.”

Varela is part of a cast that includes Peter Lockyer as Jean Valjean, Lauren Wiley as Cosette, Max Quinlan as Marius and Betsy Morgan as Fantine. The sweeping Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil score contains the signature numbers “I Dreamed a Dream” and “On My Own.”
