National Tour Star Jennifer DiNoia Talks Going Green as 'Alter Ego' Elphaba in Wicked

'I continually get inspired by [Elphaba], to be a better person.'

Jennifer DiNoia, who will be defying gravity as the star of Wicked at Houston's Sarofim Hall at the Hobby Center starting on July 10, enjoys being green. DiNoia plays Elphaba in the blockbuster musical and has taken on the role in five different companies of the high-flying show. Here, the star talks to Broadway.com about what she loves about playing the Oz outsider.

“I think Elphaba is kind of my alter ego,” DiNoia said. “I’m actually quite shy, but I have a tendency to ‘fly off the handle,’ like Glinda says in the show, when I feel passionate about something.” The actress also addressed the activism of the part, “I get to become this leader of change. I continually get inspired by her to be a better person and stand up for what I believe in.” There's one more thing DiNoia loves about the role: “I really like to fly!”

Centering on the unlikely friendship between Elphaba and Glinda, Wicked features songs by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman. In addition to DiNoia, the cast features Hayley Podschun as Glinda, David Nathan Perlow as Fiyero, Gina Ferrall as Madame Morrible and Walker Jones as the Wizard.

“Getting to hear how the audience relates to Elphaba is truly incredible,” DiNoia said of Wicked’s dedicated fans. “I think the best part about being in this show is getting to see how many people are moved by the material.”

Wicked will fly out of Houston on August 11.
